What is Cyber?

It's not from a space movie!

"Cybersecurity" is a recently created word. Some say that it is a mix between information security and data security. Some say that it is a mix between the security of the physical and logical systems that handle or hold the data, the people that use, change or see the data and the data or information itself. It all means "information security" when you get to the baseline. Call it what you will, your actions and care for your information and the systems that process it should be the same.

Is it really that important?

Let me get your attention: in so far as the information or data that your organization processes or holds may be private, sensitive or critical enough to someone for it to remain accurate, private, pure and available, you should do things in ways to promote that. Also, if you depend on your data processing systems for doing your work, you should do at least something. However, Cybersecurity is not the number-one thing a business should worry about or spend money on. Keeping your business viable is. You should spend no more money that the information is worth protecting from unsustainable lawsuits, lost property, fines or infamy. A backrupt business cannot protect anything or generate an income to protect you from cold and starvation. No one should ever forget that, and even the cybersecurity team needs some reality on that point quite often. There must be a reasonable balance. That is my point.
